Brazil

Brazil

Jericoacoara is a virgin beach hidden behind the dunes of the west coast of Jijoca de Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil. 35 years ago, the area around Jericoacoara was declared an environmental protection area and became a Brazilian national park in 2002. This is where our knitters reside and lovingly ply their trade. Many of them do so using Portuguese knitting technique — a knitting style that involves attaching a hook or pin to the knitters shirt to run yarn through.

This technique involves movements that are totally different from English or Continental knitting.

The tension of the yarn is always there owing to the hook or pin (some knitters even run the yarn behind their necks).  This results in a tight-knit into which artisans can pour their colorful creations.

Iraca Palms

Iraca Palms

There are multiple techniques used in weaving Iraca Palm. The coil technique takes the palm stalk and bundles about 6-7 pieces per row.  The Iraca Palm is then wrapped around them creating various colours and patterns. As the palm is wrapped around the leaf stalk the artisan begins to coil or create a circle with the material. To join the various layers together they use a needle, and with the same palm “sew” they put a stitch every few inches to hold the layers together.  There is also a wire frame technique by which the artisans weave the Iraca Palm around the wire creating intricate lace-like patterns . This is exceptionally detailed handwork passed down through generations and results in an absolutely beautiful item that is also functional and surprisingly sturdy.

M A J A I S ®

Our productive process is totally handcrafted, we design, prepare, melt, cut, assemble, polish, inspect, plate, pack, and deliver our pieces thanks to our team’s hands.

One M A J A I S ® piece requires at least 10 different collaborators in order to complete its creative cycle. Our filigree is made of 975 Silver, and usually, we sell our pieces in 24K Gold plated. Most of our designs complement themselves with other handcrafted techniques or Colombian supplies such as Iraca (from Nariño), Werregue (from Choco), and raw Emeralds. We also implement imported supplies such as Miyuki beads, Swarovski Crystals, and resin paints. All our pieces are created by our designer ISABEL CRISTINA PARRADO, who always looks for exclusivity, therefore we elaborate no more than 24 units per reference to cover our current demand.

Mochila Bags from the Colombian Wayuu

Mochila Bags from the Colombian Wayuu

Known as the “people of the sun, sand, and wind,” the indigenous Wayúu tribe has lived in the semi-arid landscape of the remote La Guajira peninsula of Columbia for centuries.  Here the desert meets the Caribbean Sea at the northernmost point of South America and the vistas are incredible and the mind is free, and wanders. And so too with the amazing mochila bags, the Wayuu create.

Delicately and painstakingly handwoven by the women of the Wayuu, these artful accessories tell stitched stories of each maker.  They evidence a tradition passed down for generations prior to colonial times where the maker literally weaves her own experiences, thoughts, and dreams into the bag as design elements.  No two bags are alike and no bag is ever truly recreated – each one an artisanal one-of-a-kind piece.

Terracotta

Terracotta

With Terracotta, Alado explores the idea of pausing, going back to the elemental, and examining the origins. Ceramic turns out to be a clarifying metaphor for exploring that idea since it is made of the four elements of nature: earth, water, air, and fire. Like soft clay, it evokes images of creation, formation, molding, craftsmanship, and skill; while being already fired clay it expresses delicacy, brightness, sonority, splendor, and fragility. Intuition materializes the intuition and the transforming spirit that resides in human nature.

The Knit Collection

Knitting and fiber arts have always been a central part of the Russian way of life. So much so that the goddess of ancient Slavs,Mokosh, was, in fact, a spinner woman. As a result, to this day, many Russian rituals and festivals are associated with yarn, weaving, and spinning. Traditional folk dress exhibiting fine artisanal knitting is still created by hand-worn for festivals.

In the case of Equal Hands, these techniques, and this openness to free form design have been uniquely translated to accessories.  We work with a number of independent women in Russia to bring you these exquisite creations - researching sustainable materials, modern hardware upgrades, and ancestral techniques to create one-of-a-kind pieces.
